The vibrant spirit of Mardi Gras has been channeled through the creativity of young minds in St. John the Baptist Parish. This season, the Krewe of Shoebox challenged students to craft their very own shoebox floats, keeping alive a cherished tradition that kindles the artistic fervor of the community. The organizers recently announced the winners of the 2026 competition, celebrating the impressive works of these nascent talents.
In a statement on the Parish's official Facebook page, they extended hearty congratulations to Ki'Cen White, a Pre-K student at Garyville / Mt. Airy Math & Science Magnet School, for clinching the top prize in the competition. White's entry left a distinct mark on the judges, securing her the coveted first place. Isaiah Macdougal, a fifth grader from the same school, took home the second-place honor, while Devante Gant, in Universal Kindergarten at West St. John Elementary, claimed the third spot on this year’s podium.
The competition extends beyond the bounds of mere festivity. It serves as a testament to the Parish's investment in nurturing creativity and community engagement from an early age. Each miniature float, carefully crafted by the hands of these young individuals, mirrors the cultural richness that pulses through Louisiana. "We’re proud of all our talented students!" the Facebook post reads, recognizing the broad spectrum of participants who lent their energies and enthusiasm to make this event stand out.
Shoebox parades have long been an understated yet cherished component of the Mardi Gras festivities, allowing those who can't participate in the larger parades to still engage in a form of celebration that's all their own. It's a tradition that has been upheld with pride and joy within the Parish, demonstrating their resilience and the continuance of their cultural fabric. "Let the good times roll!" the Parish's post wraps up, echoing the timeless call that resonates with the festive season.
