A 38-year-old man incarcerated at the Allegheny County Jail died Saturday afternoon after corrections staff declared a medical emergency, authorities said. Staff treated him on site until medics arrived, but he was later pronounced dead.
A medical emergency was called at about 2:42 p.m., and the inmate was declared dead around 3:13 p.m., WPXI reported. Correctional staff performed emergency care until paramedics got to the scene, and jail officials said the man’s family has been notified.
Officials Open Internal Review And Police Probe
In a press release, Allegheny County said an internal mortality review will be conducted, as is standard after any in-custody death, and that County Police were notified to launch an investigation. The county added that the Allegheny County Office of the Medical Examiner will identify the man and determine the cause and manner of death under its usual protocols.
Not The First Death To Draw Scrutiny
The jail has been under a microscope in recent years over in-custody fatalities. An outside review by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care found no significant trends in deaths but did flag inconsistent documentation and recommended improvements, WESA reported.
Lawsuits And Advocates Press For Answers
Advocates and family members have continued to push for more transparency from jail leadership. A federal lawsuit filed after a 2023 death alleges substandard medical care and notes that at least 17 people died in or shortly after stays at the jail between March 2020 and September 2022, the AP reported.

The county police investigation and the jail’s internal review remain underway, and the Allegheny County Office of the Medical Examiner will release the man’s identity and the cause and manner of death when its work is complete, WPXI reported. Jail officials say they have notified the inmate’s family and will follow established review procedures.
