A 67-year-old man was critically wounded Tuesday afternoon in a shooting on Chicago's Near West Side, just a short walk from the United Center. The gunfire erupted near Madison and Leavitt streets, about three blocks west of the arena, and quickly turned a routine afternoon into another crime scene.
First responders rushed the man to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he was listed in critical condition, according to CBS Chicago. Police had not released additional details on what led up to the shooting, and it was not immediately clear whether anyone had been taken into custody.
Stroger’s role in trauma care
John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital houses one of Chicago’s level-1 adult trauma centers and has long been on the front lines of treating gun violence. Its trauma team routinely handles a heavy share of the city’s shooting victims, a volume that experts say has sharpened its ability to keep patients alive. As Becker's Hospital Review reports, Stroger has played a central role in driving down firearm deaths in Chicago.
Investigation ongoing
Chicago police said detectives are investigating the Near West Side shooting but have not yet provided more information on a possible motive or suspect. CBS Chicago notes that authorities have not said whether anyone has been taken into custody.
The investigation remains active. Hoodline will update this story as authorities release more information.
