A 47-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy were shot and killed in Akron on Saturday night, turning the area near 30 W. Wilbeth Road into a crime scene and leaving a neighborhood stunned while detectives sort through what happened.
Officers responding to multiple 911 calls found the boy fatally shot inside a vehicle near the intersection and pronounced him dead at the scene at about 8:34 p.m. Emergency crews rushed the woman to Akron General Medical Center, where she died at 8:50 p.m., according to Cleveland.com.
Akron police have launched a double-homicide investigation into the deaths. So far, authorities have not released a motive and have not identified any suspects, Cleveland.com reported.
Investigation and autopsies
"No additional information is available pending notification of next of kin and completion of autopsy examinations," police said in a statement to Cleveland.com.
The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office is handling the examinations and will determine the official causes and manners of death, according to the Summit County Medical Examiner.
Local context
Akron's homicide totals have seen-sawed in recent years, with reporting showing a drop in murders in 2025 even as shootings still account for most killings. Local coverage has credited gun-intelligence work and targeted enforcement as contributing factors in that shift, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.
What remains unknown
Police have not announced any arrests or identified suspects in the case, and detectives say the investigation is ongoing. Officials plan to release additional details after next-of-kin notifications are complete and autopsy findings are finalized.
