
A 38-year-old Alamance County man was found dead Wednesday in a field in northwestern Chatham County, according to authorities. The Chatham County Sheriff's Office identified him as William Calice Cooper III. Deputies made the discovery after responding to a report about a suspicious person in the area.

Cooper's body was found near the 900 block of Moon Lindley Road, a rural stretch in the Snow Camp area of northwestern Chatham County, according to county maps. Moon Lindley Road runs past open farmland and a handful of homes, underscoring just how out-of-the-way this scene was, per Chatham County.
Investigation update
The sheriff's office confirmed the victim's identity as 38-year-old William Calice Cooper III of Alamance County and said investigators are still working to determine his cause of death. The discovery came after a call days earlier about a suspicious person in the same area. Deputies searched at that time but did not locate anyone, and investigators now believe Cooper was the person described in that earlier call.
