A Sunday night drive through Tewksbury turned deadly when a head-on collision at a busy intersection left one driver dead and sent at least one other person to the hospital, according to local officials.
Crash And Road Closures
The crash happened around 6:48 p.m. at Andover Street and Cooney Road, where first responders arrived to find two vehicles with heavy front-end damage, NBC Boston reported.
As crews worked the scene, the Tewksbury Police Department urged drivers to steer clear of the area and set up detours. Traffic was diverted from Hood Road to River Road, and officials warned that Andover Street would remain shut down for several hours while emergency teams cleared debris and investigators documented the crash site.
What Emergency Crews Found
When police and firefighters reached the intersection, they found two vehicles that had collided head-on. Both drivers were treated at the scene, then taken to a local hospital, according to Boston 25.
One of the drivers later died from their injuries, the department confirmed. Investigators requested help from state and county teams as they began processing the scene, a sign this crash will get a full technical workup rather than a quick paperwork filing.
Investigation Underway
The Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Section, the unit that handles technical reconstruction in serious and fatal crashes, has been called in to assist, according to Mass.gov.
The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, which oversees major traffic-fatality investigations in the county, is also involved, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office. Together, the agencies will work to determine how and why the two vehicles ended up in a deadly head-on impact on a well-traveled Tewksbury corridor.
Local Context
This is not the first deadly crash to hit the town in recent months. In December 2025, a single-vehicle wreck on Main Street under the Route 495 overpass left one person dead, Boston.com reported.
Town officials and local law enforcement have repeatedly called in State Police reconstruction teams for complex collisions, and those investigations often come with lengthy road closures that tie up nearby routes. The pattern highlights how a single serious crash can ripple through Tewksbury’s traffic grid and put added strain on emergency services already juggling everyday calls.
Tewksbury police are asking anyone who drove through the area around the time of the crash or who has relevant dash-cam or surveillance footage to reach out to investigators. Tips can be directed to the department’s non-emergency line at (978) 640-4385, and additional contact information is available on the Tewksbury Police Department website.
