According to Franklin County Now, local residents and the motel's owner described a large police presence in the area. State Police had been assisting with an out-of-state homicide investigation before troopers and local law enforcement officers encountered the suspect at the motel, according to NBC Boston. The suspect sustained a fatal gunshot wound, and the incident remains under investigation.
Worcester County, Not the Local DA, Leads the Probe
Although Erving sits in Franklin County, within the territory normally overseen by the Northwestern District Attorney's Office, it is the Worcester County District Attorney's Office, headed by District Attorney Joseph D. Early, Jr., that has taken lead responsibility for investigating the shooting and releasing official findings, the same NBC Boston report states. In this case, the Worcester County District Attorney's Office is handling the investigation outside the local district.
The Worcester County DA's office has scheduled a 4 p.m. press conference Thursday at the Erving Police Department to release formal findings on the officer-involved shooting, per NBC Boston's report. Under Massachusetts General Law Chapter 38, Section 8, district attorneys investigating fatal officer-involved shootings can request formal court inquests, in which a sitting district court judge hears sworn witness testimony and reviews physical evidence in a public proceeding, according to the Middlesex District Attorney's Office. Inquest reports and transcripts automatically become public record once such a proceeding concludes.
A Small Force in a Storied Roadside Spot
The French King Restaurant & Motel sits at 129 French King Highway on 130 acres of countryside, a family-owned lodging property built in 1954 by Edwin and Helen Prondecki and now managed by Frank Prondecki, according to the French King Restaurant & Motel. The property's own history notes the nearby French King Bridge.
Responding alongside state troopers was the Erving Police Department, a small municipal force of four officers serving a rural town of roughly 1,467 residents, according to Discover Policing. It isn't the department's first brush with a violent, high-stakes encounter alongside state troopers: in October 2018, an Erving officer was publicly commended for saving a Massachusetts State Trooper's life after shooting an 18-year-old carjacking suspect who was stabbing the trooper during a pursuit that entered Vermont and Massachusetts and ended with the suspect crashing in New Salem, per CBS News.
Same Stretch of Highway Saw Investigators Last Fall
French King Highway has drawn investigators before. In November 2025, State Police detectives and Erving police conducted a death investigation along the same corridor after a 40-year-old local hunter was found deceased near the base of a tree, according to the Northwestern District Attorney's Office. No foul play was suspected, and the medical examiner would determine the cause of death.
Details of Wednesday night's shooting remain limited ahead of Thursday's briefing, and the identity of the suspect, along with the specifics of the homicide investigation that brought him to the area, have not been released. The Worcester County District Attorney's Office is expected to address those questions when it convenes at the Erving Police Department this afternoon.
