An 18-year-old man is in critical condition after someone opened fire into his moving car early Saturday on Chicago’s Southwest Side, turning a quiet pre-dawn stretch of Ashburn into a crime scene.
What the police say
Chicago police say the shooting happened just before 4:15 a.m. in the 8300-block of South Kedzie Avenue, when another vehicle pulled up alongside, and someone inside started shooting, according to ABC7 Chicago. The 18-year-old was hit in the body and rushed to Christ Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. Area detectives were assigned to the case, and police did not immediately release additional details.
A block with a troubled recent history
The 8300 block of Kedzie has seen more than its share of serious violence in recent years. In June 2024, a man was arrested in connection with a fatal crash on the same stretch that began after nearby gunfire, FOX 32 Chicago reported. The Chicago Sun-Times has also documented a fatal shooting on the block in 2020. Together, those incidents highlight ongoing public-safety concerns along this portion of Kedzie Avenue.
Recent shootings in Ashburn
Ashburn has grappled with other serious shootings as well. In September 2025, a 15-year-old boy was critically wounded and taken to Christ Hospital, according to CBS Chicago. That case, like Saturday’s attack, was being investigated by Area detectives.
Investigation ongoing
Area detectives are continuing to investigate the latest shooting, and police have not announced any arrests, according to ABC7 Chicago. Authorities have not released information about a possible suspect, the number of attackers, or a motive.
