A Saturday afternoon drive near the Astrodome turned deadly when a crash on Almeda Road left one person dead and a busy Houston corridor under investigation.
The collision, reported around 4:30 p.m. near Hepburn Street, involved a motorcycle and a van. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, according to FOX 26 Houston. Emergency crews responded and investigators remained on scene as authorities worked to piece together what happened.
Officials have not released additional details, including the identity of the person who died or whether anyone else was injured.
Motorcycle deaths rising in Texas
The crash lands at a time when motorcyclist fatalities are climbing statewide. The Texas Department of Transportation reports that nearly 600 motorcyclists were killed in Texas last year. The agency is urging drivers to "look twice," warning that "it can be hard to judge the distance, size and speed of a motorcycle."
TxDOT’s safety campaign also pushes drivers to use extra caution at intersections and when turning, where split-second misjudgments can turn routine trips into life-and-death situations.
Houston's roadway toll
Locally, traffic deaths have been mounting. Houston Public Media reports that Houston recorded its highest number of traffic fatalities in 2024, with safety advocates pointing to speed and road design as major contributors.
Crashes like Saturday’s on Almeda add yet another grim case to that growing tally.
What police say
Houston police have not released the victim's name and say the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact authorities, according to FOX 26 Houston.
This story will be updated as officials release more details.
