The countdown is on for Atlanta transit riders. In a two-month window, MARTA customers are being pushed to move from the old silver Breeze cards to the new Better Breeze fare system. The agency starts the transition on March 28 and will shut down the current Breeze fare media and the Breeze Mobile 2.0 app after May 2, 2026. Anyone who has not moved their fare or picked up new fare media by then risks losing whatever stored balance is still sitting on the old system.
What’s Changing And When
According to MARTA, both the existing Breeze system and the new Better Breeze setup will run side by side from March 28 through May 2. That overlap is meant to give riders time to burn through remaining value, buy new cards and passes, or test open payment. The new Better Breeze cards, along with multi-day and monthly passes, go on sale March 28 at Breeze vending machines, MARTA RideStores, reduced-fare offices and systemwide pop-up locations. MARTA says riders with registered accounts will be able to move remaining balances from a current registered Breeze account to a new registered Breeze account from May 2 through October 30, 2026.
Why Now: World Cup Crowds And New Tech
The agency is pitching the overhaul as a mix of crowd control and convenience. MARTA and its vendor say the Better Breeze upgrade brings tap-to-pay contactless options, account-based cards and a modernized back-office system designed to handle bigger event surges. In a press release, vendor INIT described the project as a way to prepare the network for major 2026 events, while adding tools for real-time system monitoring, revenue sharing and flexible fare products. The open-payment feature will also let riders tap a contactless bank card or a mobile wallet at a faregate or on a bus instead of loading a separate transit card.
Can You Save Your Stored Fare?
MARTA first told riders to spend down stored value, then shifted course and agreed to move eligible balances for qualifying registered accounts after the cutover. As reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, interim CEO Jonathan Hunt said, “We will work with each individual to ensure their money is safely moved to a new Breeze account,” and the agency says transfers can be processed from May 2 through October 30, 2026. Riders who use employer-issued or institutional cards are being told to check with their payroll department or institution about when replacement cards will arrive, since MARTA plans to send new media through those partners as well.
Where To Get New Cards And How The New App Works
Starting March 28, riders can pick up the new orange Better Breeze cards at station vending machines, MARTA RideStores, reduced-fare offices or at pop-up tables, according to MARTA. The new plastic is account-based, which means your fare lives in an online account instead of being stored directly on the card itself. Breeze Mobile 2.0 will be retired and replaced by an updated app that requires riders to set up a new account and create a virtual card for loading fare and passes.
Station Work And Rider Impacts
Behind the scenes, crews are already rolling through stations to install new equipment, and that work is starting to show up in daily commutes. Some faregates will be temporarily closed as the system is swapped out, so riders should follow posted signs and audio announcements when entering and exiting. Coverage from Rough Draft Atlanta notes that busy stations may see changed entry patterns while work is underway and that customers would be wise to budget extra time for trips until installation is wrapped up.
Key Deadlines At A Glance
Local reporting has flagged a series of “last chance” dates for the current Breeze products. According to WSB-TV, 30-day passes stop being sold on March 1, 20-trip and 10-trip passes end March 15, 1-day through 7-day passes end March 22, and 1-trip and 2-trip passes are cut off March 28. MARTA says base fares themselves stay the same: $2.50 for a one-way trip, $1 for reduced fare and streetcar, and $4 for Mobility service.
Bottom Line
The short version: do not procrastinate. Register any current Breeze account now if you have not already, use up small balances you do not plan to transfer, and map out when you will grab a new Better Breeze card or download and set up the new app after March 28. Pay attention to station signage and MARTA service alerts so you are not the rider stuck at a faregate when the old system finally goes dark on May 2.
