Online chats that Aurora detectives say started with a 13-year-old persona have landed a 25-year-old man in jail, facing a stack of felony charges tied to child sexual abuse material.

Investigators say the case began in early January and escalated quickly. After reviewing online conversations, detectives executed a search warrant, seized electronic devices, and, according to police, turned up child sexual abuse material along with messages tied to someone the suspect allegedly believed was 13. He was arrested in early March and remains jailed ahead of a mid-April court date.

Aurora police say detectives opened the investigation on Jan. 6 after reviewing online conversations in which the suspect allegedly communicated with someone he believed to be a 13-year-old and discussed a sexual act, according to Fox 32 Chicago. Officers obtained an arrest warrant and took Michael Orozco, 25, into custody on March 4. A subsequent search of his electronic devices led investigators to additional child sexual abuse material, police said.

"This investigation represents some of the most important work our detectives do," Aurora Police Chief Matt Thomas said in a statement, adding that protecting children from exploitation, whether online or in the community, is a priority, Fox 32 Chicago reported. Police say Orozco was charged with four counts of possession of child sexual abuse material involving a child under 13 and four counts involving a minor under 18, along with indecent solicitation and grooming allegations. The department did not release additional details about potential victims.

Charges and next steps

Aurora police say Orozco faces four counts of possession of child sexual abuse material involving a child under 13 and four counts involving a minor under 18, along with indecent solicitation and grooming charges. He is being held at the Kane County Adult Justice Center and is due in court on April 10. Prosecutors are expected to review the case as it moves through the Kane County court system.

What the charges mean

Under Illinois law, indecent solicitation criminalizes knowingly soliciting or discussing sexual conduct with someone the defendant believes to be a child, and the criminal code includes internet-based provisions that can elevate penalties when online grooming is alleged. The statute for indecent solicitation is codified at 720 ILCS 5/11-6 (Illinois General Assembly), and grooming and related offenses are enumerated elsewhere in the Illinois Criminal Code. Convictions can carry prison time, fines, and mandatory registration as a sex offender, depending on the specific counts and circumstances.

How these probes often begin

Investigations into alleged online exploitation frequently start when tech companies or members of the public report suspected material to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children's CyberTipline, which reviews tips and refers leads to local law enforcement for investigation. The organization has processed tens of millions of reports in recent years, creating referrals that often prompt search warrants and arrests. That referral-and-triage system is a key reason detectives can identify alleged possession of child sexual abuse material and related online solicitation.

Aurora police say anyone with information about this investigation should contact the department, and tips may also be submitted through the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children's CyberTipline. Orozco remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Kane County court on April 10.
