Hundreds of Austin city employees opened their March paychecks to find an eye-popping surprise: some were paid nearly twice what they were owed. A payroll glitch at the City of Austin sent roughly $1.4 million in excess pay to about 675 workers in the March 13 pay period, and human resources officials say the money will be clawed back through planned repayment arrangements.
Audit Flags Oversight Gaps
The City Auditor’s Office has already been warning that loose oversight can leave public dollars exposed to mistakes. In its Consultant Contract Management audit, the office found that city departments frequently closed contracts without formal performance evaluations and did not consistently keep complete records. Auditors urged stronger post-contract reviews and better documentation to tighten up how the city monitors and reports its spending.
Payroll System Error Overpaid Staff
Those broader concerns suddenly felt very real on payday. According to the Austin American-Statesman, the city’s Workday payroll system processed the March 13 pay period one week at a time instead of as a full pay cycle, which in some cases triggered double payments. The error traced back to a non-required data field that was left blank on a spreadsheet tied to job descriptions.
The paper reports that Austin Human Resources notified affected employees on March 12, corrected the issue for the current pay period, and is developing repayment plans so staff can return the extra money over time instead of in a single hit to their checks.
What Officials Say and What Is Next
The auditor’s push for required post-contract evaluations and stronger documentation underscores a larger message: the city needs tighter controls as it works to recover the overpaid funds. City leaders may look at extending those safeguards to payroll and other high-risk systems while human resources finalizes exactly how repayment schedules will work for each employee.
Impacted workers are being urged to keep a close eye on their pay stubs and reach out with questions. The City of Austin Compensation Division provides payroll contact information for both employees and departments.
