Those chocolate treats promising a little extra spark in the bedroom turned out to be packing real prescription firepower instead.
Bay Area seller Gear Isle has pulled two sex-themed chocolate products from the market after testing showed they contained undisclosed erectile dysfunction drugs. Gold Lion Aphrodisiac Chocolate Sachet and ilum Sex Chocolate were both recalled when lab analysis found sildenafil and tadalafil inside the packages. The products were sold online across the United States, and health officials warn that people taking nitrates for heart conditions face the highest risk of a dangerous, potentially life-threatening plunge in blood pressure. Gear Isle says it is notifying customers and arranging returns and refunds.
According to the FDA, the recall covers Gold Lion Aphrodisiac Chocolate Male Enhancement Sachet (UPC 795847916279, expires 06/2027) and ilum Sex Chocolate Male Sexual Enhancement Booster (UPC 1002448578911, expires 12/25/2027). The agency says the chocolates were distributed nationwide through internet sales and notes that Gear Isle is arranging for returns and refunds and has already contacted customers. Consumers with questions can reach Gear Isle customer service at 888-387-4753 or [email protected], the notice adds.
As reported by the Los Angeles Times, the FDA first flagged the ilum Sex Chocolate in February after confirming it contained tadalafil. The paper also points out that Gear Isle describes itself as an online seller of adult novelties and does not manufacture many of the products it offers. To date, the FDA says Gear Isle has not received reports of adverse events tied to these chocolates.
Why doctors say it is not just a labeling flub
Sildenafil and tadalafil are prescription phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors that relax blood vessels and boost blood flow, which is exactly why they are used to treat erectile dysfunction. Their prescribing information warns that taking these drugs together with nitrates, such as nitroglycerin for chest pain, can trigger a sudden and severe drop in blood pressure that sometimes requires emergency treatment, according to DailyMed. Because people might unknowingly combine hidden ED drugs with their heart medications, regulators treat undeclared PDE-5 inhibitors in over-the-counter products as far more than a simple labeling mistake.
Part of a bigger, stubborn pattern
Food and supplement watchdogs say this recall fits a familiar script. Products that promise sexual enhancement are frequent offenders when it comes to secretly spiking formulas with prescription-strength ED drugs. An analysis at The FDA Expert tracks a series of recent recalls and enforcement actions involving online sellers and argues that these tainted items remain a persistent public health problem. Regulators and compliance consultants say retailers should treat sexual-enhancement supplements as high-risk inventory unless third-party testing shows they are clean.
What to do if these chocolates are in your pantry
If you bought either of the recalled products, health officials say you should stop using them immediately and set them aside for return. Gear Isle has been reaching out to customers and is arranging refunds. Anyone who experiences dizziness, fainting, or chest pain after eating the chocolates should seek medical care right away and tell clinicians about possible exposure to sildenafil or tadalafil.
Adverse reactions can be reported to the FDA MedWatch. Consumers with questions can also contact Gear Isle customer service at 888-387-4753 or [email protected].
