A report of a student flashing what looked like a gun inside Langley K-8 on Monday sent Pittsburgh Public Schools into quick response mode, with district officials later confirming the item was a BB gun.
According to the district, staff tracked down the student and contacted the student's parents, who confirmed the object was a BB gun and not a traditional firearm. The district says it also filed a report with ChildLine in connection with the incident.
District Response
The tip that set everything in motion came in through Pennsylvania's statewide Safe2Say system and triggered a district review, WTAE reported. In a statement, Pittsburgh Public Schools stressed that "the safety of our students is our top priority, and appropriate steps were taken to investigate and address this situation."
How Safe2Say Works
Safe2Say Something is an anonymous reporting program run by the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General. Tips flow into a 24/7 crisis center, where staff triage the information and pass it along to school administrators and, when needed, to law enforcement, according to Safe2Say Something.
Not the First Time
The Langley case is not happening in a vacuum. Last June, staff at Morrow K-8 found a loaded firearm inside a student's lunchbox and secured the weapon. That discovery led to additional screening measures in the district, WTAE reported. Episodes like these have kept school safety protocols front and center for families and staff across Pittsburgh Public Schools.
School Safety and Next Steps for Families
The district says every school operates with its own tailored safety plan, runs regular drills, and trains staff in the Standard Response Protocol. School-based teams also coordinate with local emergency responders and community partners, according to the district's School Safety page.
Langley K-8 serves preK-8 students in the Sheraden neighborhood. Families who see or hear something concerning can submit a tip through Safe2Say, call 1-844-SAF2SAY, or reach out to the district Parent Hotline at 412-529-HELP for information and support. Contact details for the school itself are listed on its Langley K-8 page.
