A reported break-in at a Beard Street home in Salisbury spiraled into gunfire Thursday, leaving one person dead and two others wounded, according to police. Officers rushed to the scene after a call about a breaking-and-entering, and the situation quickly escalated into a shooting. One person died at the home, while two others were taken to a hospital.
According to WCNC, police said one of the hospitalized people is a man believed to be the shooter, and detectives indicated that criminal charges could follow once the investigation wraps up. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is assisting Salisbury police, officials said. The person who died has not been publicly identified.
Police Response and Ongoing Investigation
Salisbury detectives stayed on scene into the investigation, collecting evidence and talking with witnesses to piece together what happened inside the home. Officers did not immediately release details on how serious the injuries were or provide an update on the suspected shooter’s condition, citing the active investigation.
Authorities are asking for the public’s help and urged anyone with information or video related to the incident to contact Salisbury-Rowan Crime Stoppers at 866-639-5245.
What We Know About the Victims
Police confirmed that one person died at the scene. Two others were transported to a hospital for treatment, but officials have not released their names, ages, or current conditions. Investigators said they are reviewing forensic evidence along with witness statements as they work to sort out everyone’s role in the confrontation.
Potential Legal Fallout
Detectives said charges may be filed depending on what the investigation uncovers, but as of Thursday no formal charges had been announced. With the state bureau now involved, authorities said they are treating the case as a serious criminal investigation while they work to establish a timeline and possible motive.
