Belle Isle is lining up a full slate of free happenings on Friday, as the island celebrates 313 Day with art, music and family activities spread across its parks. At the center of it all is the long-awaited reopening of the Belle Isle Casino, which returns to public use after years of structural work. From sunrise storytimes at the aquarium to a sunset Detroit House Party inside the restored casino, the day is designed to reconnect Detroiters with a familiar patch of waterfront turf that has been behind construction fencing since 2023.
Structural repairs to the casino were covered with $4.75 million in federal relief funds, and the building is set to officially reopen at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 13, with reservations available through Sept. 30, 2026, according to The Michigan Chronicle. For regular visitors, the comeback is less about a new venue and more about reclaiming a classic public gathering spot that has been off-limits during the upgrade period.
The Belle Isle Conservancy is pitching the weekend as both a soft rebrand and a family-friendly relaunch of the island’s programming. In a press release, conservancy president Meagan Elliott called 313 Day “a celebration of everything that makes Detroit special,” and the announcement notes that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has put roughly $174 million into capital projects on Belle Isle over the past 12 years. The refreshed identity and year-round calendar are meant to keep neighborhood voices and local partners front and center as historic sites reopen and public spaces get more consistent use.
What’s happening on 313 Day
The activities are spread across the island. At the Remick Bandshell, PORTAL by Salam Rida will run from noon to 5 p.m. Flynn Pavilion will host Music on Belle Isle from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum is extending hours to 7 p.m.
The Belle Isle Aquarium plans storytime sessions at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., along with a limited-edition 313 Day merchandise drop with Detroit artist Tony Whlgn and a name-a-baby-sturgeon fundraiser with donation levels starting at $3.13. The Metropolitan Museum of Design Detroit will lead a Biomimicry Design Challenge from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The day caps off with a Detroit House Party inside the casino from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., led by DJ Bruce Bailey, with entry limited to the first 313 guests. As reported by The Michigan Chronicle, the programming is meant to mix neighborhood energy with newly restored historic backdrops.
Logistics and reservations
Drivers should keep in mind that vehicles entering Belle Isle generally need a Michigan Recreation Passport. Many visitors will still opt for transit, biking or walking instead. Reservation details for the casino and other facility rentals are being posted on state platforms, and the conservancy’s calendar is carrying the latest event updates and vendor information.
For the state’s facility notes and reservation links, check the Michigan Department of Natural Resources along with the Belle Isle Conservancy event listings.
Why the reopening matters
The casino’s return is part of a broader push to reinforce Belle Isle’s role as a cultural and recreational anchor, which officials say makes the island safer and more welcoming for families. The conservancy’s rollout, combined with the DNR’s capital work, reflects a long-term strategy to stabilize historic structures while using them regularly for free or low-cost community events, according to the conservancy’s announcement on PR Newswire.
For up-to-the-minute event details and any weather-related changes, organizers are steering visitors to the Belle Isle Conservancy calendar and the DNR’s Belle Isle page. Those sites will carry last-minute updates on hours, capacity limits and reservation links as the island leans into its spring season. The Belle Isle Conservancy also maintains volunteer information and additional visitor resources for anyone looking to plug into the island’s ongoing revival.
