The Veterans Memorial High School community is reeling after 28-year-old teacher and multi-sport coach Leyton Hernandez was killed Friday in a two-vehicle crash outside the Coastal Bend. According to MySA, the district said Hernandez was in his fifth year as a teacher at Veterans Memorial and served as a multi-sport coach. In a statement, the district added, "Our prayers are with the Hernandez family." MySA also reported that Hernandez earned a bachelor's degree from Texas State University in 2020 and was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.

The Veterans Memorial staff directory lists Hernandez as a science teacher at the campus, a role that put him in daily contact with students far beyond the playing field. The outlet added that Hernandez is survived by his father, Roland Hernandez; his mother, Cynthia Hernandez; and his sister, Lauren Stinson.
