Downtown Honolulu’s office crowd just picked up another grab-and-go lifeline. U-Kitchen Hawaiʻi has quietly rolled out a bento and musubi counter in the heart of Bishop Street, giving weekday workers a new spot for fast, inexpensive lunches inside the Topa Financial Center.
Downtown Outpost and Hours
The new counter sits at 700 Bishop Street in the Topa Financial Center, next to Komala Curry and Bar Leather Apron, according to Aloha State Daily. It keeps strictly weekday hours, opening from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., which lines up neatly with the downtown lunch rush and quick breaks between meetings.
Local Roots
U-Kitchen began as a modest bento shop on Oʻahu, building a following on value-priced bentos rather than flashy decor. Honolulu Magazine previously spotlighted the Kalihi location for its bargain-friendly plates. From there, the brand expanded to additional spots around the island, and the move into Downtown Honolulu continues that incremental rollout.
Menu Highlights and Prices
The downtown menu sticks to the greatest hits while slipping in a few office crowd specials. Staples like grilled salmon ($8.90), nori bento ($6.99) and butterfish ($11.99) all make the cut. The Bishop Street location also adds downtown-exclusive bentos, including mochiko chicken ($10.50), chicken katsu ($10.50), hamburg steak ($12) and chicken katsu curry ($12.99), Aloha State Daily reports.
Musubi fans get a full lineup, too. The counter offers salmon ($2.99), tuna mayo ($2.99), spicy tuna ($3.19), mentaiko ($3.29), unagi ($4.79), kakuni ($4.39) and Spam egg ($3.39), which covers a good chunk of the local comfort-food spectrum in portable form.
Where It Fits in the Lunch Crowd
Downtown Honolulu is crowded with quick-service spots that live and die on price and speed, and the Topa building already houses a cluster of offices and ground-level eateries, according to property listings on CityFeet. The neighborhood has not been an easy ride for small food operators, a reality that U-Kitchen’s owner has spoken about, telling the Honolulu Star-Advertiser in 2024 that construction and shifting foot traffic have made running a neighborhood lunch counter especially challenging.
For this downtown location, the team plans to broaden the formula beyond bentos and musubi. The counter is set to add sandwiches, pastas and other grab-and-go items as the concept evolves. For menus and hours at U-Kitchen’s other locations, check the company’s listing at U Kitchen.
