Arrivals at New York’s LaGuardia Airport were briefly brought to a halt Wednesday after a security scare on a transatlantic flight forced controllers to reroute the jet to Newark instead. Officials later said the alert was tied to a bomb threat that turned out to be unfounded, but the precaution still tangled afternoon schedules and left inbound flights waiting in the sky. The diverted aircraft landed safely, and no injuries were reported.
According to Bloomberg, the Federal Aviation Administration temporarily paused arrivals into LaGuardia while authorities checked out the situation on board. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey told Bloomberg the alert stemmed from a bomb threat that ultimately proved unfounded.
Flight-tracking data shows Scandinavian Airlines Flight 907 from Oslo, listed as SK907, diverting from its planned arrival path and touching down at Newark Liberty International Airport instead of LaGuardia, where it was recorded as landing safely, according to Flightradar24.
What airport officials said
Port Authority officials told investigators the threat was baseless and that the situation was cleared once on-the-ground checks were completed, Bloomberg reported. The FAA did not immediately report any impact to scheduled departures from LaGuardia while arrivals were on pause.
Delays and travel impact
FlightAware’s live LaGuardia arrivals board showed inbound flights stacking up as controllers worked to resequence traffic once the hold was lifted. Travelers headed into or out of the New York area were warned to expect some residual delays and to lean on airline apps and alerts for the latest status or rebooking options.
Security-related traffic holds at LaGuardia can ripple through the region because of the tight choreography between New York-area airports, so some passengers caught in Wednesday’s backup may continue to feel the effects even after operations normalize. Airlines and officials are expected to release additional details, and this story will be updated as that information becomes available.
