Local reporting
Local station WBTV published a story March 13 that relayed the WARN filing and the May 17 effective date. WBTV noted the warehouse sits near the North-South Carolina border and described the reduction as affecting more than 80 employees.
What the WARN filing means
The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act generally requires employers with 100 or more employees to provide 60 days’ advance written notice of plant closings or mass layoffs that meet the law’s thresholds, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The notice is intended to give workers and communities time to pursue reemployment, training and other supports.
What’s next for workers
North Carolina’s Rapid Response team typically reaches out to employers after a WARN filing to plan transition services, job fairs and training; the state’s WIOA plan says coordinators aim to contact employers quickly to arrange support and meetings. Affected employees can also find reemployment services and job listings through NCWorks or by contacting local workforce centers for Rapid Response resources. We’ll update this story if Kenco or state officials provide further details.
