
A 17-year-old boy was left in critical condition after a drive-by shooting early Saturday in the Brighton Park neighborhood on Chicago’s Southwest Side, police said.
Officers were called to the 2400-block of West 48th Street around 1 a.m. after a red sedan drove past and someone inside opened fire as the teen walked, according to police. The Chicago Fire Department treated him at the scene before he was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
What Police Say
The teen suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body and was rushed to the hospital, where he remained in critical condition, according to ABC7 Chicago.
Area One detectives have been assigned to the case. Investigators have not yet released any information on a motive or possible suspects, and police said no additional details were immediately available.
Neighborhood Context
Brighton Park and other Southwest Side neighborhoods have long grappled with recurring drive-by shootings and youth gun violence. A 2016 Brighton Park drive-by involving a teen victim led to a lengthy prison sentence in a separate case.
The Chicago Sun-Times has also documented previous shootings involving teens in the area, highlighting Brighton Park’s ongoing struggle with street violence.
Investigation Underway
Area One detectives are canvassing the neighborhood and reviewing any available surveillance footage as they work to track down whoever opened fire, according to ABC7 Chicago.
No arrests had been announced, and authorities had not released further information about the shooting as detectives continued to follow leads.
