A Sunday afternoon traffic dust-up in Wakefield turned ugly when, police say, a driver pulled out first a gun, then a knife, and slashed another motorist’s tires before taking off.
The incident unfolded on Sunday, Jan. 11, at about 4:15 p.m. at East 232nd Street and White Plains Road, involving a 40-year-old man. According to officials, the other person in the dispute produced a firearm, then a knife, and proceeded to slash all four tires on the victim’s car before fleeing. The suspect drove off in a gray Ford Explorer heading westbound on East 232nd Street. No injuries were reported. Police later released photos of the man they are trying to identify.
Investigators asked for the public’s help in tracking down the suspect in a post from NYPD Crime Stoppers, urging anyone with information to message @NYPDTips or call the hotline.
Suspect Description and Vehicle
Officials describe the man as male and say he was last seen wearing a white jacket, white sweatpants and tan boots. He fled the scene in a gray Ford Explorer, heading westbound on East 232nd Street. Those details, along with the sequence of events, were reported by Norwood News.
How to Report Tips and Reward
Anyone with information is asked to DM @NYPDTips or call 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). For Spanish, the line is 1-888-57-PISTA. Under the city’s Crime Stoppers program, qualifying tips can carry a reward of up to $3,500, according to the NYPD.
Where This Fits in Recent Road-Rage Episodes
The Wakefield case comes amid several high-profile road-rage incidents this winter, including a Jan. 9 West Village crash that ended with officers fatally shooting a man who drew what appeared to be a firearm, as reported by ABC7 New York and coverage from FOX5 New York. Together, they highlight how quickly traffic disputes in the city can escalate.
Police are urging anyone who recognizes the man or the gray Ford Explorer in the NYPD images to contact Crime Stoppers. All calls are confidential, and authorities say even a small tip could help move the investigation forward.
