A man was found dead Tuesday morning on a CTA Brown Line train at the Belmont station on Chicago’s North Side, briefly halting Brown and Purple Line service during the rush-hour commute. Police pronounced him dead at the scene and have opened a death investigation.
What police say
Officers told WGN-TV that an adult male was discovered unresponsive inside a train car and was pronounced dead on site. Autopsy results are still pending as Belmont-area detectives work to determine what happened. For now, investigators are treating the case as a death investigation while they carefully process the train car and platform.
Where it happened
CBS News Chicago reports the scene was tied to the 900 block of West Belmont Avenue. First responders described the victim as roughly 25 to 30 years old. Crews and CTA staff worked to clear the platform, move the affected train, and get service back on track while police documented the scene.
Context and safety concerns
The incident comes at a time of heightened scrutiny over safety on CTA trains, following several high-profile attacks and a federal review calling for tougher security measures. NBC Chicago has reported that federal transit officials have pressed the CTA to lay out specific plans to reduce assaults and boost rider safety after violent episodes on CTA lines last year.
Investigation ongoing
Detectives say they are waiting on autopsy results to determine the cause and manner of death, and authorities have not yet released the man’s identity, WGN-TV reports. Anyone with information is urged to contact Chicago police. So far, officials have not announced any arrests or identified any suspects.
