Gunfire tore into a home on Superba Avenue NE in Rome on Thursday night, leaving a child shot in the left shoulder and a neighborhood with more questions than answers, according to police.
Officers were called to the home around 10:30 p.m., where they found the wounded child inside. Investigators later recovered shell casings near the intersection of Superba Avenue NE and Clervue Circle, and as of the latest update the shooter had not been identified or arrested.
What police say
According to Atlanta News First, officers who responded to the scene discovered the child suffering from a gunshot wound to the left shoulder.
Investigators observed that the left side of the home faces the intersection of Superba Avenue NE and Clervue Circle, where the shell casings were found, while the right side of the home showed no bullet holes. That detail is helping detectives piece together where the shots likely came from and how the rounds traveled into the residence.
Surveillance footage captured nearby activity
Detectives are also combing through video evidence. “Surveillance footage from a nearby gas station showed multiple cars involved in previous drive-by shootings,” according to Atlanta News First.
Police say the shooter is still at large as investigators review the footage and continue processing the scene. Authorities have not released additional details about possible suspects or a motive.
Regional context
The Rome shooting comes amid a string of high-profile incidents involving children across metro Atlanta this month. On February 24, a 7-year-old girl was killed in a drive-by shooting in northwest Atlanta, as CBS Atlanta reported.
In cases like these, investigators across the region frequently lean on surveillance video and community tips to track vehicles, identify suspects, and piece together what happened in the crucial minutes before and after shots are fired.
