Last Saturday, a Caltrain run through San Mateo turned tragic when a person was struck and killed near East Bellevue Avenue. The San Mateo County Coroner's Office has not released the victim's name while officials work to notify family members, and train service along the corridor was briefly interrupted as emergency crews moved in.
According to the Palo Alto Daily Post, the collision occurred at around 5:30 PM near E. Bellevue Avenue. The Post reports that the coroner is holding back the victim's identity until next of kin can be reached.
Caltrain's reporting policy
In recent years, Caltrain has scaled back routine public announcements about deaths along its tracks, saying the approach is intended to reduce the risk of copycat suicides. The Hoodline report on the Alma crossing tragedy examined how the quieter posture has left neighbors and riders to piece together what happened from delayed trains and scattered local reports.
Rising toll on the corridor
Caltrain recorded 10 deaths on its corridor in 2022, 15 in 2023, and 19 in 2024 - the highest total in a decade, according to reporting by the Palo Alto Daily Post. That report noted that the agency released a fatality log last year, which, in turn, sparked renewed safety debates among officials and riders already anxious about the trend.
What happens next
The Coroner's Office is responsible for investigating and determining the official cause and manner of death, as well as notifying next of kin, according to the San Mateo County Coroner's Office. More information is typically made public after the family has been notified and the coroner's review is complete.
