Authorities say a North Side Lululemon turned into the scene of a high-dollar grab on Sunday, ending with two men in cuffs and a minivan loaded with what deputies allege was stolen merchandise.
Cook County sheriff’s deputies report recovering thousands of dollars in clothing, including 118 Lululemon items, after a store employee flagged two people filling bags inside the shop. The haul, along with an apparently packed Honda minivan, is now central to felony retail theft charges against the pair, according to the sheriff’s office.
According to a post from the Cook County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded after a worker reported two people filling bags at the Lululemon in the 3500 block of North Southport Avenue. Deputies say they recovered two bags holding 118 Lululemon items valued at $9,384. A short time later, officers located a Honda minivan in the 3600 block of North Ashland Avenue that they reported was carrying another $9,000 in merchandise from various retailers. Photos of the seized goods were shared on the office’s social page, according to the same post.
Sheriff’s police identified the two suspects as 25-year-old Christopher Slawek and 51-year-old Michael Brown. Officials say Slawek was taken into custody in the 3500 block of North Greenview Avenue, while Brown was arrested in the 1400 block of West Addison Street. Both men were charged with felony retail theft, the sheriff’s office said in the post. The office also emphasized that “defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law,” a line that appeared alongside photos of the seized merchandise in the Cook County Sheriff's Office post.
Cook County task force steps up enforcement
The arrests land amid a broader crackdown by the Cook County Sheriff's Organized Retail Crime Task Force, which has been ramping up operations across the city. The unit has combined undercover work with data-driven tactics to trace stolen goods and their resale, according to ABC7 Chicago. ABC7’s I-Team reported that the task force has recovered more than $5 million in suspected stolen merchandise over the past two years and that many of those items ultimately surface on online marketplaces. Sheriff Tom Dart and task force commanders have described some of the involved crews as organized criminal operations rather than one-off shoplifters.
Earlier coverage from CBS Chicago highlighted task force initiatives such as “Operation Smell Good,” which targeted rings accused of hitting multiple retailers. That report noted that the team has made hundreds of arrests and recovered large quantities of merchandise. Investigators have said that the resale of stolen goods can help fund other criminal activity, which is why officials keep stressing disruption and recovery efforts across neighborhoods.
Legal notes
Both men now face felony retail theft charges and are due to appear in Cook County court, where prosecutors will determine formal charges and any possible enhancements. The sheriff’s office reiterated in its post that “defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law,” and upcoming court records will outline the next steps in the case. Authorities say additional details could be released as investigators and prosecutors move the matter through the system.
