A late night bomb scare in Crosby's Newport neighborhood sent families out of their homes on Wednesday and ended with a homeowner in handcuffs, accused of making it all up. Deputies and a bomb squad rolled into the quiet subdivision after a report of an explosive device in a vehicle, triggering precautionary evacuations that left nearby residents rattled and several homes empty for hours.
Bomb Squad Swarms Barrett Gables Home
Harris County Constable Precinct 3 says deputies were dispatched to a home on Barrett Gables in the Newport neighborhood after someone reported there was a bomb in a vehicle parked at the property. As a safety measure, people within a 250 foot radius were evacuated while the scene was thoroughly checked.
After hours of work, deputies and the bomb squad declared the area safe at about 11:30 p.m. The constable later said the homeowner was arrested on suspicion of making a false report and booked into the Harris County Jail, according to ABC13 Houston.
Legal Consequences For False Bomb Reports
Under Texas law, knowingly reporting a fake bombing or other bogus emergency that prompts an official response is a crime. Texas Penal Code Section 42.06 spells out the offense of false alarms or reports and notes that it is usually treated as a Class A misdemeanor. The same conduct can be bumped up to a state jail felony if it involves places such as schools, public transportation or other critical public services, per the Texas Penal Code.
Neighbors Left Shaken
Hoaxes like this come with real world fallout for everyone nearby. Evacuations, bomb unit sweeps and late night street closures can upend routines and fray nerves for hours, even when no device is ultimately found. Authorities say that anyone with information about incidents like this should call local deputies and let trained responders handle it rather than confronting possible suspects themselves.
