Precinct 4 deputies arrested a Cypress man on Monday after a caller at a home in the 21900 block of Bronze Leaf Drive allegedly threatened to detonate explosives and carry out a mass shooting targeting Highway 290. Deputies detained the suspect at the scene and, during a follow-up search, reported finding an AR-style rifle, rounds of ammunition and components investigators described as capable of making explosive devices. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad later removed the items while deputies secured the home, as reported by ABC13.
According to ABC13, Constable Mark Herman’s office said deputies responded to the call and court records indicate the caller had allegedly planned to bomb the freeway. Authorities say the arrested man was taken to the Harris County Jail on a felony count of unlawful possession of components of explosives.
Court filings reviewed by KHOU list specific materials recovered during the search, including high-performance enamel, a liquid chlorinator, canisters of all-purpose propane and batteries that investigators say could be combined into an explosive device. That reporting identifies the suspect as 20-year-old Jeremiah Chavez and notes he made an initial probable-cause appearance on Tuesday, where bond was set at $250,000.
Bomb Squad Response And Evidence Handling
Officials said the Bomb Squad removed the materials to protect nearby residents and to preserve evidence while deputies continued the investigation. Texas law outlines procedures for how explosive weapons and related components are documented, tested and disposed of by law enforcement, and those protocols guide how bomb technicians handle scenes like this. The Texas Code of Criminal Procedure sets the statutory procedures followed when explosive devices or components are seized.
Charges And What Comes Next
Chavez faces a felony charge of unlawful possession of components of explosives, and the case will move through Harris County courts as investigators finish their review, KHOU reports. Prosecutors could add charges depending on lab testing of the materials and what investigators uncover during follow-up interviews.
Officials did not immediately release additional details about a possible motive or whether anyone else was involved. The investigation remains active, according to ABC13. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact law enforcement through official channels.
