A man was shot and killed Monday evening in the Marshall Heights neighborhood of Southeast Washington, D.C., according to police. Officers responded to reports of gunfire and found the victim suffering from gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene as homicide detectives cordoned off part of the block and launched their investigation.
A D.C. police spokesman said the shooting happened in the 5300 block of E Street SE and was reported at about 5:35 p.m., with the man pronounced dead at the scene, according to WJLA. Photos published by the station show officers processing the scene as detectives worked into the night.
Citywide Homicide Trend
Metropolitan Police Department records show the city had recorded 10 homicides year-to-date as of March 9, 2026, roughly a 63 percent drop from 27 at the same point in 2025, figures the agency describes as preliminary, according to MPD. The department also maintains a public tip line at (202) 727-9099 and a text tip number, 50411, for anyone with information.
Investigation Underway
The station described the killing as the city’s 11th homicide of 2026 and highlighted the contrast with this time last year, when the city had logged 27 murders, according to WJLA. Detectives with the Homicide Branch continue to investigate and say they will update the public as new information becomes available.
