Dallas firefighters were already working a blaze near Parkland Memorial Hospital yesterday when, officials say, someone decided to light more fires right in front of them. Crews on Maple Avenue, just before 7 p.m., quickly knocked down a small fire at a commercial building, then watched as a suspect was taken into custody. No injuries were reported, and investigators stayed behind to sort out what happened.
Officials: Suspect Started Fires While Crews Worked
According to WFAA, Dallas Fire-Rescue said the suspect was actively setting small fires in front of firefighters as they worked the scene, a move that drew immediate attention from both crews and bystanders. Multiple witnesses reported seeing the behavior. Firefighters were able to douse the commercial building fire quickly and without anyone getting hurt.
Witnesses And Response
Witnesses and fire personnel told investigators they saw a man starting several small blazes before responders stamped them out and detained an individual. The stretch of Maple Avenue near Parkland was temporarily blocked off while crews wrapped up suppression work and investigators searched for surveillance video and additional witnesses.
Potential Charges Under State Law
Under Texas law, intentionally setting a fire can land someone in felony territory. Texas Penal Code §28.02 classifies many arson cases as felonies and increases penalties if anyone is hurt or if a home or place of worship is targeted.
What Happens Next
Authorities did not immediately say whether formal charges had been filed. Investigators typically review witness statements and any available video before handing a case over to prosecutors. Parkland Memorial Hospital reported no impact to its operations while firefighters and investigators cleared the scene, according to WFAA.
