Dallas started today, on the sticky side, waking up to muggy, mostly cloudy skies, temperatures near 64°F, and a light breeze out of the south. There is a slight chance of a few morning showers, but forecasters are really watching a more organized line of thunderstorms expected late Tuesday (March 10) into early Wednesday (March 11) that could bring damaging winds and small hail.
Timing And Threats
According to the National Weather Service Fort Worth, warm, humid air will keep highs in the low-to-mid 80s today. Tomorrow, the atmosphere grows more unstable, which could allow a few isolated storms around midday, followed by a much better chance of storms late Tuesday and through the overnight hours. The forecast discussion notes that storms may consolidate into a line that pushes into the I-35 corridor late Tuesday night, with damaging straight-line winds and large hail possible in the stronger cells. The highest coverage of storms is expected late Tuesday night through the predawn hours of Wednesday (March 11).
Afternoon Winds And Commute
South to south-southwest winds should run around 5-15 mph today before ramping up tomorrow. Forecasters are calling for gusts up to about 25 mph during the day and as high as 30 mph inside thunderstorms. That could make the Tuesday evening commute a bit of a handful, with gusty crosswinds and unsecured yard furniture or decorations turning into airborne nuisances. Plan for slower travel and build in extra time if you have late-night or overnight drives.
Rain, Flooding, And Safety
Stronger thunderstorms may drop heavy but brief downpours, which can quickly lead to ponding on roads and localized flooding in low-lying neighborhoods. The system is expected to move along fast enough that widespread flooding is not anticipated. Even so, it is a good night to keep your phone charged for alerts, bring loose outdoor items inside, and avoid driving through flooded roadways. If severe winds or hail head your way, move to an interior room until the worst of the weather passes.
Where We Reported Before
We first flagged this setup in an earlier piece; check out our look at how Dallas planned to enjoy Sunday sun before Tuesday night storms for more background and planning tips. This update fine-tunes the timing and reflects the growing signal for severe weather late Tuesday into Wednesday morning.
Looking Past Midweek
Once the front slides through, drier and cooler air filters in Wednesday night into Thursday, with highs near the mid-60s on Thursday. By Friday and into the weekend, a warmup returns, and afternoon highs should climb back into the upper 70s to mid-80s. Keep an eye on updated forecasts through Tuesday afternoon in case timings shift or if watches and warnings are issued for the overnight hours.
