Midday traffic on Waterloo Road suddenly turned into a crime scene Monday when a man was shot and killed, prompting Cleveland police to shut down the block and call in homicide detectives.

The shooting drew a large response from officers and EMS crews as investigators moved quickly to secure the 15300 block of Waterloo Road and start collecting evidence.

Fifth District officers were called to the scene at about 1:10 p.m., where Cleveland EMS was already treating a 45-year-old man, according to 19 News. He was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

Officers recovered a firearm and took one man into custody. Charges are pending as detectives work to piece together what led to the deadly encounter, 19 News reported.

The Cleveland Division of Police’s Homicide Unit has taken over the case and is handling scene processing and witness interviews, according to a department update from the Cleveland Division of Police. Detectives remained on Waterloo Road late into the afternoon, working through the early stages of what is now an active homicide investigation.
