A 35-year-old man was shot and killed yesterday in North Oakland after gunfire erupted in the 3000 block of San Pablo Avenue, according to police. Officers rushed to the area after the city's gunshot-detection system picked up the rounds, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene. No arrests have been announced, and investigators say they are still working to identify a suspect.
According to The Mercury News, the shooting happened at about 3 PM and followed a confrontation between the victim and another person. Oakland police are counting the killing as the city's 12th homicide of 2026 and did not immediately release the victim's name.
Investigators Seek Witnesses
Oakland police have put out a call for tips as they try to piece together what led up to the deadly encounter. Anyone with information is urged to contact the department's homicide section at 510-238-3821 or the tip line at 510-238-7950, and to email photos or video to [email protected].
As reported by SFGATE, investigators said they have not identified a suspect and are appealing to people who may have captured anything on their phones, security cameras, or dashcams to come forward.
Where This Fits In
The killing adds to a worrying start to the year, even after a drop in homicides in 2025. KTVU reported that Oakland recorded 67 homicides in 2025, down from 82 in 2024, though several high-profile shootings in January and February have kept public safety front and center.
What Neighbors Can Do
Neighborhood groups and city leaders have repeatedly stressed how bystander video and community tips can help detectives make headway in cases like this. For now, homicide detectives say they are chasing down leads and again urging anyone who saw or recorded anything connected to Sunday's shooting to contact police.
