A late-night U-turn along a busy stretch of Reseda Boulevard in Porter Ranch turned deadly Saturday, when a motorcyclist slammed into a car that was flipping around in the roadway. The rider was pronounced dead at the scene, and authorities said his identity had not yet been released.
The collision happened around 11 p.m. near Beaufait Avenue in the north Valley neighborhood, briefly shutting down traffic while officers investigated and cleared the scene.
According to MyNewsLA, Sgt. Kilgrow of the Los Angeles Police Department's Valley Traffic Bureau said the driver was attempting a U-turn from the northbound lanes to the southbound side of Reseda when the motorcycle broadsided the car. The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Valley Traffic Bureau, and no additional information has been released as of Sunday.
Reseda Corridor Has A Dangerous History
Reseda Boulevard through Porter Ranch has already seen its share of tragedy. In October 2022, a three-vehicle collision on the same corridor killed two teenagers and led to extended closures and renewed calls for tougher traffic enforcement in the area, according to ABC7.
Residents and drivers along the north-Valley artery have long complained about speed, risky maneuvers, and the sheer volume of traffic that funnels through the neighborhood.
Motorcyclists Face Outsized Risk On California Roads
State numbers underscore just how vulnerable riders remain on California streets. Motorcyclists are still disproportionately likely to die in crashes: the California Office of Traffic Safety recorded 583 motorcyclist fatalities in 2023, down from 649 in 2022, per the California Office of Traffic Safety.
While the agency reported a drop in deaths involving riders without helmets, safety officials say turning conflicts and driver inattention continue to show up again and again in deadly motorcycle crashes, including those on busy urban corridors like Reseda.
What Investigators Will Examine
The LAPD Valley Traffic Bureau is now tasked with piecing together exactly what happened in the moments before impact. Investigators will reconstruct the crash, analyze vehicle positions, review physical evidence, and take witness statements. They will also look for any nearby surveillance or dash-cam video that might help determine fault and whether any traffic violations occurred.
According to MyNewsLA, no charges had been announced as of Sunday, and detectives were still processing the scene.
