A quiet family dinner in Kensington turned scary in seconds when a large tree branch crashed through a first-floor apartment window, spraying glass across the room and injuring a 6-year-old boy, his mother said. The child was cut on his cheekbone, hands and feet but did not need stitches, according to the family. The window and a window air conditioner were later boarded up, and the damage has topped $1,000. The family says they are still on edge, and neighbors are now openly talking about safety on the block.
Surveillance video shows teens on Argyle Road
Surveillance footage shared with News 12 New York appears to show a group of teens walking along Argyle Road just before the incident. In the clip, one teen briefly picks up what looks like a brick, sets it down, then grabs a large branch and hurls it straight through the first-floor window. The video captures the glass exploding inward and the frantic reaction inside the apartment.
Helen Lopez told News 12 New York she "got scared" when she heard the crash and initially feared it was gunfire or a brick smashing through the glass. She said her son was left bleeding from his cheekbone, hands and feet but ultimately did not need stitches. Lopez called on anyone who recognizes the teens in the video to speak up so detectives can track them down.
Police investigating; tips requested
Police are investigating, and the family says no arrests have been announced so far. Anyone with information about the teens seen in the video is asked to contact the NYPD's 70th Precinct so detectives can follow up.
Aftermath and neighborhood unease
Lopez said the smashed window and damaged air conditioner together add up to more than $1,000 in repairs, and the opening has been boarded while the family continues sweeping up glass. Neighbors told reporters they were shaken by what they see as a pointless act, and several parents on the block said the incident has sharpened long-standing concerns about groups of teens hanging out on nearby streets.
