Downtown Los Angeles is in for a blast of summer-style heat Friday, with sunny skies and a forecast high near 93°F and only modest nighttime relief. A Heat Advisory is in effect through 8 p.m. tonight, and inland neighborhoods will be even hotter. Residents without air conditioning, older adults, young children, and outdoor workers are urged to slow their pace, plan for reduced exertion, and take frequent water breaks.
Afternoon Heat and Timing
Patchy morning low clouds are expected to clear by mid-morning, sending temperatures from the 60s into the 80s by late morning and into the low 90s by mid-afternoon, with the hottest stretch likely between about 2 and 4 p.m. South-southwest winds will be light, generally 0 to 10 mph, so there will not be much breeze to take the edge off. Overnight lows will linger in the upper 50s to mid 60s, offering limited cooldown. The NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard has the Heat Advisory and detailed forecast information for the region.
Weekend and Early Next Week
Temperatures are expected to dip slightly on Saturday, with highs in the mid 80s, before climbing again on Sunday and early next week. Forecast guidance shows a strong ridge returning by Monday with several inland spots flirting with the upper 90s to around 100°F by Tuesday and Thursday, which could bring additional advisories. Nighttime readings are projected to stay elevated through much of next week, limiting overnight recovery from the daytime heat. Try to shift strenuous outdoor plans to the early morning or later evening hours whenever possible.
How to Stay Safe When It Sizzles
Drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous activity between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m., and never leave children or pets in parked cars. If you need a cool place, many library branches and city facilities open as cooling centers during heat events, so call 2-1-1 or check local resources for hours and locations. See the City Emergency Management Department for official cooling-site information and guidance. If you or someone else shows signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, move to shade, hydrate, and seek medical help immediately if symptoms worsen.
