An alleged late-night car break-in on East Nashville's Main Street has two men in custody and a third still on the run, according to Metro Nashville police. Officers said they were called to the 600 block of Main Street on Wednesday, where they encountered three men walking near the vehicle that had reportedly been burglarized. Two were detained, and the third bolted on foot.
Police detained two suspects near the scene
According to WSMV, detectives say they found the trio walking along the same stretch of Main as the car they are accused of breaking into. Officers arrested 20-year-old Keandrez Byrd and 26-year-old Howard Gordon, who police report were carrying a window punch and a flashlight when they were taken into custody. Both men were charged with burglary of a motor vehicle and possession of burglary tools and booked on $11,500 bond each. Police say 24-year-old Robert McWilliams remains at large, and they expect additional charges in the case.
MNPD warns drivers to lock up
The arrests landed right in the middle of the department's ongoing "Park Smart" campaign, which has been sounding the alarm about guns stolen from cars across Davidson County. Per a Metro Nashville Police Department media release, roughly two-thirds of guns reported stolen in the county this year have been taken from vehicles. Year-to-date, 144 firearms have been stolen from cars, and officials are again urging drivers to lock doors, remove keys, and keep anything valuable out of sight. The Metro Nashville Police Department spelled out the numbers and safety tips in its recent update.
How to avoid becoming a target
Investigators say many of these crimes are crimes of opportunity, and they are pushing simple steps that can make a big difference. Police recommend parking in well-lit areas, taking electronics and firearms out of vehicles whenever possible, and keeping bags and packages out of view so they do not tempt passersby. If you spot suspicious activity, officials advise noting what you can, such as descriptions and direction of travel, but avoiding any direct confrontation and calling authorities instead.
