The estranged husband of Lexington Police Officer Kaitlin Crook has died, adding a new twist to a high-profile shooting that has gripped the city since December.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) notified local officials Saturday that Zachary Rogers had died, according to the agency. Rogers was one of three people shot on Dec. 17, 2025, in an incident that left Crook dead and two men critically wounded.

The SBI said it was informed that Rogers died around 2:15 a.m. Saturday, according to WXII. Officials have not released any additional details on how or where he died. The SBI says its investigation into the December shooting is still active.

What Happened On Dec. 17

Just after 9 p.m. on Dec. 17, Lexington officers were called to a parking lot on Cedar Lane Drive outside the Home and Appliance King. There, they found three people suffering from gunshot wounds, according to Police1.

The off-duty officer, 25-year-old Kaitlin Crook, was pronounced dead at the scene. The two other victims were identified as 35-year-old firefighter Zachary Rogers and 31-year-old Joshua Moore, who were taken to local hospitals for treatment.

Investigators have said the three knew one another and that the shooting appeared to be an isolated, domestic-related incident.

Evidence And Legal Status

Authorities recovered two handguns at the scene and have said the weapons are believed to belong to the two men who were wounded, according to local reporting.

An SBI spokesman has told reporters that no charges were filed in connection with the shooting while the agency continued its investigation. Rogers was treated in hospital care and later released on Jan. 16, 2026, according to WFMY.

Investigators have said there is no indication of additional suspects.

What Comes Next

Lexington officials have made counseling and support services available to first responders affected by the case and have urged anyone with information about the Dec. 17 shooting to contact the SBI, ABC11 reported.

The SBI has not said whether it will release more information about Rogers' death, but additional details on the December shooting could emerge as the investigation continues.
