Park Slope’s 7th Avenue post office has gone unexpectedly dark after a stored fire extinguisher malfunctioned in the branch’s back office, shuttering a neighborhood staple and sending customers on a short but annoying detour for their mail. Neighbors say the doors have been locked for at least a week and a half, with no clear word on when the familiar counter windows will be back in action.
In a statement to News 12 New York, the U.S. Postal Service said a stored fire extinguisher “malfunctioned” in the back office and confirmed there is currently no timeline for the 7th Avenue branch to reopen. News 12 New York also reported the post office has been closed for at least a week and a half while the interior is evaluated and cleaned.
Where to Pick Up Mail
A sign on the locked front door points customers to the Van Brunt Post Office on 9th Street, roughly 0.7 miles away. The Postal Service lists the Van Brunt station at USPS as 275 9th Street in Park Slope. That location is temporarily handling pickups and PO box business while the 7th Avenue counter stays closed.
How Rare It Is, and What Crews Told Reporters
A firefighter told News 12 New York that fire extinguishers are pressurized and, in theory, one could explode. In practice, the firefighter said, the bigger concern is a rupture that leaks chemicals into the air, which can create a health and cleanup problem.
Standards for portable extinguishers call for monthly visual checks and yearly maintenance, according to NFPA, whose NFPA 10 standard covers portable fire extinguishers. That level of routine attention helps explain why incidents like this are unusual.
Manufacturer safety data sheets for multi-purpose “ABC” dry-chemical extinguishers say the powder inside, which is largely monoammonium phosphate, can irritate eyes, skin, and the respiratory tract. They advise that any leaking or ruptured units should be ventilated and cleaned up by trained personnel. The Kidde safety data sheet notes that the pressurized units can present asphyxiation and dust exposure hazards and includes first aid and cleanup guidance for accidental releases.
In the meantime, locals have turned to neighborhood forums to crowdsource answers. On the Park Slope subreddit, a growing thread on Reddit has collected eyewitness accounts, photos of the closure notice, and the same basic question on everyone’s mind: when is the post office coming back. The online chatter mirrors the paper sign at the door and the uncertainty that sets in when a routine neighborhood service suddenly vanishes.
For now, the Postal Service is sharing limited details as authorities assess any hazards and clear the space. Customers who usually rely on the 7th Avenue branch are being urged to verify the Van Brunt location’s hours, or call ahead before heading over, and to keep an eye out for USPS updates on when the 7th Avenue counters will reopen.
