Federal agents are putting up to $5,000 on the line for information leading to the arrest of Donald Steven Lang, a Canadian-born sailor last seen aboard his sailboat, ISHI, in Hawaii in January 2025. Lang is wanted on state charges in Idaho alleging he sexually assaulted a minor between 2003 and 2007, and authorities say he should be considered an escape risk. Local and maritime officials are urging anyone who might know where he is to contact law enforcement without delay.
FBI Honolulu sounded the alarm on March 9, posting an alert on X that announced the reward and asked the public to send in tips through the bureau's online portal or hotline. As shared by FBI Honolulu, tips can be submitted at tips.fbi.gov or by calling 1-800-CALL-FBI.
What the FBI Says
The FBI's national wanted page lays out the case against Lang in detail. According to FBI, he was charged on April 9, 2025, with three counts of lewd conduct with a minor under sixteen and one count of sexual battery of a minor, and a state warrant was issued in Kootenai County, Idaho. The wanted poster describes Lang as a white male born September 15, 1963, about 5-foot-8 and 210 pounds, with light brown and gray hair and blue eyes. It also highlights his distinctive tattoos, including a faded conch shell with the word "captain" above it on his right arm.
The FBI listing notes that Lang's "home base" is Hawaii and that he may be sailing between Hawaii and Fiji, Hawaii and Mexico, toward Papua New Guinea, or possibly Indonesia. The posting also states that the FBI's Salt Lake City Field Office is assisting the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office in the case.
How to Report a Sighting
Boaters who spot a vessel that might match Lang's should immediately contact authorities on the water. Reports can be made on VHF-FM channel 16 or by calling the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Honolulu command center at (808) 842-2600 so the Coast Guard can respond if needed. The Coast Guard handles maritime reports and coordinates search efforts, while the FBI continues to receive tips through its portal and hotline as posted by FBI Honolulu, according to the U.S. Coast Guard Pacific Area.
What to Look For
Investigators say the sailboat to watch for is named ISHI. The FBI lists Lang's date of birth as September 15, 1963, and again describes him as about 5-foot-8 and 210 pounds with light brown and gray hair and blue eyes. They are calling particular attention to his tattoos, especially the faded conch shell with the word "captain" above it on his right arm.
Authorities stress that anyone who believes they have spotted Lang or his vessel should not approach. Instead, they are asking the public to pass information to law enforcement using the reporting channels noted above and to call 911 in an emergency, per FBI.
