A deadly crash near an I-44 on-ramp in Fenton left a driver dead after his car slammed into a truck that had stopped near the ramp, police said. The car then left the roadway and hit a fence, where first responders found the driver unresponsive. Authorities have not released his name as the investigation continues.
What police say
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, police said the car struck a parked truck near an I-44 on-ramp, veered off the interstate and crashed into a fence. Emergency crews pronounced the driver dead at the scene, the paper reported. Investigators are still working to determine what led up to the collision.
Investigation and context
The Missouri State Highway Patrol collects and publishes crash reports and typically handles investigations of serious interstate collisions; crash records can be searched through the MSHP crash reports system. The I-44 corridor in the Fenton area has seen other serious incidents in recent years, including a documented big rig rollover in Fenton that closed lanes last year. Authorities say they are examining both road and vehicle factors as part of the ongoing probe.
Safety reminder
Traffic-safety experts continue to urge drivers to slow down, avoid sudden stops on high-speed shoulders and give stopped vehicles plenty of space to prevent secondary crashes. The National Safety Council recommends pulling over as safely as possible and "moving over" for stopped vehicles and emergency responders on fast roads to reduce the risk of another collision.
