A Shelby County judge has dropped charges against a Memphis woman involved in a Frayser crash last Thursday that killed a 6-year-old boy, a ruling that leaves prosecutors still combing through the case.
Authorities say the child ran into the street to retrieve a ball when he was struck. The driver had been cited for driving on a suspended license and for lacking insurance, but those counts were dismissed in court, even as the investigation continues.
According to Action News 5, court records identify the driver as Kenyunte Goss and say the wreck happened at the intersection of Signal Street and Whitney Avenue. Court documents show Goss’s charges were dropped on Monday after a hearing before Judge Karen Massey. Investigators told the station that Goss remained at the scene after the collision. The Shelby County District Attorney’s office told the outlet the case remains under investigation.
Memphis Ranks Among Most Dangerous For Pedestrians
Crashes like this are part of a larger and troubling pattern. A recent report from Smart Growth America titled Dangerous By Design ranked the Memphis metro among the nation’s deadliest regions for people walking. The analysis points to street design and higher speeds on major arterial roads as key factors behind a rise in pedestrian deaths in recent years.
Legal Outlook
The Shelby County District Attorney’s office told Action News 5 the case remains under investigation, so dropping the current charges does not necessarily close the matter. Prosecutors could refile criminal counts if new evidence emerges, and the child’s family would still have the option to pursue civil claims. For now, authorities say they are continuing to piece together what happened at the scene.
