Husband-and-wife team Joey and Kaitlyn Chavez opened earlier this month at 107 South 3rd Street, transforming a downtown storefront into a relaxed breakfast-and-lunch hangout with a compact market. Morning brings pastries and a full coffee program; midday shifts to schiacciata sandwiches, and select evenings are reserved for wine tastings, sourdough classes and pop-up dinners.
Lunch revolves around schiacciata sandwiches - The Pig, The Boar and The Bird - stacked on bread from Houston's Artisan Bread Gallery and built with high-quality ingredients and house-made spreads. To drink, there are Mill-King milk lattes, house syrups and a modest wine list, with salads filling out the rest of the daytime menu. As reported by CultureMap Houston, Truffle & Rye held its grand opening earlier this month and now serves breakfast and lunch Monday through Saturday.
From fine dining to neighborhood café
Chavez's résumé reads like a fine-dining highlight reel, with time at The French Laundry, the Caribou Club in Aspen and Brennan's of Houston. As they told CultureMap Houston, "We wanted to build something we would want to go to ourselves," a guiding idea that nudged the concept away from white tablecloths and toward approachable, ingredient-forward sandwiches.

Per Truffle & Rye, hours run Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with an events calendar that fills in the occasional evening with classes and tastings.
