A man was killed early Saturday when his car slammed into a concrete barrier at the GA-400 exit for Lenox Road, according to Atlanta police. Officers were called to the southbound lanes around 2:23 a.m. for a single-vehicle crash. Firefighters tried to provide medical aid, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not yet released his age or identity.
Atlanta police told WSB-TV the vehicle failed to navigate the exit ramp, went through a median, crossed over Lenox Road, passed through a second median and then hit a concrete barrier. Atlanta Fire Rescue crews assisted at the scene and helped remove the driver from the vehicle. The Atlanta Police Department’s Accident Investigations Unit is now working to determine what led up to the crash.
Lenox Interchange Has Long-Standing Safety Plans
The wreck happened at a busy Buckhead interchange that has been the focus of multi-phase efforts to improve safety for people walking, biking and driving. The area is part of the Lenox Road safety makeover project, which includes plans for a boardwalk and wider sidewalks. Planners have also proposed an elevated pedestrian-and-bicycle bridge over GA-400 that secured federal funding, according to Urbanize Atlanta. The projects are intended to cut down on the kinds of conflicts that can lead to serious crashes at the interchange.
Crash History And Redesign Push
The GA-400/Lenox corridor has seen several serious collisions in recent years, including a wrong-way crash in November 2024 that killed a 24-year-old driver, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. Local planning documents and scoping studies have highlighted intersection crash data and called for redesigns to improve safety in the area. A Lenox Road scoping study from the Buckhead Community Improvement District details crash counts and recommended changes, according to the Buckhead CID study.
Investigation Ongoing
Atlanta police say their Accident Investigations Unit is leading the probe and have not released details about the cause of the crash or the driver’s identity. WSB-TV reports the investigation is active and that authorities remained on scene working to determine what happened.
As of Saturday morning, authorities had not announced any charges or additional details. Officials say the investigation remains active and more information will be released when it becomes available.
