A violent confrontation on Grand Rapids’ northeast side left a man dead on Monday, after what police describe as a brutal assault in a front yard. First responders found the victim unresponsive, and despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Court records identify the suspect as 33-year-old Najee Hakeem Franklin, who was arraigned Wednesday on open murder and felonious assault charges, according to MLive. The victim is identified in those filings as 53-year-old Vincenzo Palmeri.
Police Call, Camera Footage Capture Chaotic Aftermath
Grand Rapids police say officers were dispatched just after 11 a.m. on March 9 to the 100 block of Palmer Street NE, near Center Avenue and Coit Avenue. Video recorded by a neighbor shows a man walking down the sidewalk with a baseball bat shortly after the assault, and later clips capture officers moving in and arresting a suspect at the scene, as reported by FOX 17.
Neighbor Says She Watched Landlord Collapse
A nearby resident, Amanda Heeringa, told News 8 she tried to step in and used pepper spray on the attacker, but could only watch as her landlord went down. “He just pounded his face in,” she said, describing the blows before Palmeri collapsed, according to reporting by WOODTV.
Records Describe Break-in, Takedown and Bat Attack
Court documents and surveillance footage reviewed by investigators outline a grim sequence. Franklin allegedly climbed into the home through a back window after finding his key no longer worked, then tackled the landlord off the front porch. While Palmeri was on the ground, Franklin is accused of striking him in the head with a baseball bat, and police say another tenant was hit in the back during the attack, according to MLive.
Charges, Custody and Calls for Tips
Franklin now faces open murder and felonious assault counts and is being held at the Kent County jail, according to court records. Police say the men knew each other and investigators do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the broader neighborhood. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Grand Rapids Police Department or Silent Observer, FOX 17 reports.
Eviction Fight Built Up Before Deadly Clash
According to reporting on the case, Palmeri sent Franklin a lease-termination letter in late December and filed a landlord-tenant lawsuit in early February, with an eviction request entered in court records last Tuesday. Neighbors told reporters the tenant had “traumatized” residents on the block for months leading up to the killing, a detail included in coverage by WOODTV.
Broader Eviction Pressures Lurk in the Background
The case highlights how volatile landlord-tenant disputes can become when eviction proceedings and questions over access collide. Advocates and court data show eviction filings have climbed in many parts of Michigan since pandemic-era moratoria expired, adding pressure to rental-assistance programs and clogging already busy court dockets, according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition’s eviction update from NLIHC.
