Authorities say a late-night shooting on Griggs Road that put a 35-year-old man in the hospital for weeks has now led to a murder charge and an out-of-state arrest.

Howard Kelly, 20, has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting that left 35-year-old Christopher Cobb dead at 4706 Griggs Road in southeast Houston. Investigators say Cobb was shot in the early morning hours of Aug. 18, 2024, and later died at Ben Taub General Hospital on Sept. 3, 2024. Kelly was arrested in Louisiana in March 2025 and is currently being held out of state while he awaits extradition back to Harris County.

Police Update and Charges

According to the Houston Police Department, Kelly was formally charged with murder on Jan. 26, and the case has been assigned to the 183rd Criminal District Court. The department’s online release includes his booking photos along with a brief summary of the allegations tied to the 2024 shooting.

How Detectives Say the Shooting Unfolded

Investigators say the gunfire broke out at about 3 a.m. on Aug. 18, 2024, at a residence in the 4700 block of Griggs Road. Responding medics took Cobb to Ben Taub General Hospital in critical condition, where he remained until his death weeks later.

As detailed by the City of Houston newsroom, detectives previously made portions of the case public by releasing surveillance images. At that time, they said the suspects left the scene in a gray 2019 Hyundai Sonata with Florida license plates.

Arrest in Louisiana and Extradition Status

Per the Houston Police Department, Kelly was taken into custody on March 18, 2025, in Louisiana and is being held at the Tensas Parish Detention Center while extradition proceedings continue. HPD has not given a firm timeline for when he will be transferred back to Harris County for arraignment.

What’s Next

The case remains active and is expected to move through the state court system once extradition is complete. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing and are asking anyone with additional information to contact investigators.
