A Wednesday afternoon drive on Highway 127 North turned deadly near Millers Ridge when a two-vehicle crash killed one driver and injured two others. The collision was reported around 4:44 p.m., according to emergency responders who notified troopers at the scene, and that stretch of the Cumberland County highway was temporarily shut down while investigators worked the wreck.
In a preliminary report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol, as reported by 3B Media News, 77-year-old Stephanie Richmond was driving a 2015 Nissan Versa northbound when her vehicle crossed the centerline and hit a southbound 2008 Ford F-150. The truck was driven by 57-year-old Eric Laub, with 59-year-old passenger Samantha Laub riding with him. Richmond suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead, while the Laubs were treated for possible injuries. The report notes that both drivers were wearing seat belts. No other vehicles were involved, and charges against Eric Laub were listed as pending.
Statewide crash trends
Head-on collisions on narrow, two-lane rural routes like Highway 127 are among the most lethal types of wrecks, in part because of the violent forces involved and the lack of room to swerve away from danger. Early estimates for 2024 from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show Tennessee's motor-vehicle fatalities dropping about 9% from 2023, to roughly 1,200 deaths. That statewide improvement can still hide stubborn risks on rural roads, according to NHTSA.
Investigation and legal status
Troopers say Richmond's Nissan crossed the centerline into oncoming traffic and struck the southbound Ford F-150, with both vehicles coming to rest against each other after impact. The patrol's preliminary report lists Richmond's injuries as fatal and notes that charges are pending against the F-150's driver, while the passenger is not facing charges. Investigators have not said what might have caused the Nissan to veer into the opposite lane, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol says the investigation remains open.
What to know
Troopers are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has additional information to contact the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
