A deadly head-on collision on SC Highway 72 near Autumnwood Drive in York County left two people dead and a third injured yesterday, according to state troopers. The crash involved a 2009 Chevrolet SUV and a 2016 Volvo tractor-trailer. The driver of the Chevrolet and a passenger were pronounced dead at the scene, and the truck driver was taken to a hospital as the investigation got underway.
According to Queen City News, the South Carolina Highway Patrol, speaking through Master Trooper William Bennett, confirmed the makes and models of the vehicles involved and said authorities have not yet released the names of the two people who were killed. Troopers responded to the wreck in the SC-72 and Autumnwood Drive area and have opened a formal investigation into what led up to the collision.
Highway 72 Widening and Safety Work
While investigators sort through what happened, York County is already in the middle of a major upgrade for parts of Highway 72 south of Rock Hill. A York County Government newsletter notes that county leaders approved a $29.55 million contract to widen stretches of the road and boost capacity. The project, funded through the Pennies For Progress program and slated for completion in 2026, is part of a longer-running push to ease congestion and improve safety along the busy corridor.

Troopers told Queen City News that investigators are still working to piece together the circumstances of the crash, and the truck driver's condition was unknown at the time of the report. Authorities have not released the victims' identities as the investigation continues.
