What started as a routine Wednesday night on Biscayne Bay turned chaotic when a hit-and-run boating incident left two people in the water and sent them to the hospital, authorities said. Calls for help came in around 8 p.m., and within minutes emergency vehicles crowded a nearby shoreline as witnesses rushed to point rescuers toward the victims. Crews pulled both people from the bay, though officials have not yet released their conditions as the scene remained active into the night.
According to WSVN, Miami Beach Fire Rescue and the Miami Beach Police Department's Marine Unit responded to the area near 7970 Biscayne Point Circle. Rescuers brought the two injured people to shore at a nearby residence, then transported them for medical care. WSVN cameras later captured paramedics offloading one patient at Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. The station reported that the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will lead the investigation and that Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers may offer a reward for information.
FWC to lead formal probe
Officials said the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will oversee the investigation into the hit-and-run, in line with its typical role in boating accidents on state waters. The FWC’s law-enforcement hub notes that investigators canvass areas for surveillance video, interview witnesses and take tips through the agency’s Wildlife Alert system. Detectives are expected to review any available footage from nearby docks, waterfront homes and passing boaters as they work to identify the vessel and operator that left the scene.
Neighbors describe 'pandemonium'
Cellphone video shared with 7News captured neighbors describing the scene as “pandemonium” while first responders worked under pressure to pull people from the water, according to WSVN. Residents said bystanders waved down boats and tried to direct rescuers toward the victims as multiple marine units and emergency crews converged on the narrow waterfront. Investigators are urging anyone who recorded video from the water or nearby docks that night to hold on to it and share it with authorities.
How this fits a worrying pattern
Biscayne Bay has seen a string of serious and high-profile boating crashes in recent years, including a 2024 hit-and-run that triggered a wide search and was detailed in a search intensifies for hit-and-run report on Hoodline. That earlier case and others have pushed residents and local officials to call for tougher enforcement of boating rules and better sharing of video evidence after collisions. Safety advocates point out that the bay’s heavy boat traffic and limited visibility at night can turn any reckless move into a serious emergency.
How to help
Authorities are asking anyone with information about Wednesday's incident to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS or to submit an anonymous tip through the Crime Stoppers website at Crime Stoppers of Miami-Dade. Tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward, and investigators are especially interested in video from boats, docks or nearby homes that could show the fleeing vessel or its operator. Officials with FWC and Miami Beach police say the probe remains active and that more details will be released as they become available.
