A Houston woman in her late 70s is in custody after police say she shot her adult son during an argument early Saturday morning inside their home on Valencia Drive. The man, described as being in his 50s, lost a significant amount of blood and was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, according to KHOU. The case is under active investigation.
Police: Mother detained, gun recovered
The Houston Police Department says the shooting happened around 3:30 a.m. at a residence on Valencia Drive in a neighborhood off Oates Road, between the East Freeway and Highway 90. Officers recovered a firearm at the scene and detained the woman, who they say is the victim’s mother, KHOU reported. The man was shot in the chest and taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Scene and condition
Houston police say “the investigation is ongoing,” as reported by KHOU. Neighbors told the station they woke up to emergency calls in the early-morning hours, but officers quickly secured the scene and authorities said there was no immediate, wider threat to the surrounding area.
Charges and next steps
Police have not yet said whether the mother will face criminal charges, and neither she nor her son has been publicly identified. Investigators with HPD are continuing interviews and collecting evidence. Once that work is complete, they will decide whether to present the case to the Harris County District Attorney's Office for potential charges.
How to help
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Houston Police. Officials have not released additional contact details in the initial reports. KHOU's report contains the latest details from HPD as the investigation moves forward.
